I joined the STEPS team in September 2023 as a MHSc student. My work focuses on performing a review of the literature with the intention of developing a competency framework for simulation technicians derived from the ones already established for other healthcare technician positions. Afterward, I plan to define the competencies to be used in the STEPS minor through the use of a Design-Thinking process followed by a consensus-building Delphi panel exercise.
In developing our simulation technician program, we've strategically defined essential competencies using a five-pronged approach.
1. We conducted a thorough literature review.
2. We examined the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® framework.
3. We leveraged ChatGPT 3.5 for insights.
Aligning the findings so far with the STEPS program's pillars, and adjusting for the new scope of practice expected from simulation technicians, we created an initial competency framework.
4. We conducted a design thinking session at SIMEXPO 2023 in Ottawa with experts in the field to capture their "wildest" ideas.
5. Finally, we will present experts in the field with our competency framework and conduct a survey to finalize the framework.
